Sheffield United are finalising a season-long loan return for Kalvin Phillips, with the midfielder set to rejoin the Blades alongside former Leeds team-mate Patrick Bamford.

What happened last season?

Kalvin Phillips joined Sheffield United on loan for the second half of the 2025-26 season but made just three appearances. His final outing ended in a red card against Sheffield Wednesday on 15 March 2026, followed by a knee injury that required surgery and cut short his spell at Bramall Lane.

Why is Chris Wilder bringing him back?

Manager Chris Wilder remains keen on reuniting with Phillips, despite the 30-year-old’s injury-hit stint. The midfielder, who has two years left on his Manchester City contract, has struggled for game time at the Etihad, starting only two Premier League matches in four years. A return to Sheffield United would allow him to play closer to family and continue mentoring young midfielders Oliver Arblaster and Sydie Peck.

What’s next for Phillips and Bamford?

Phillips was omitted from Manchester City’s pre-season tour of Asia, signalling his limited prospects under Enzo Maresca. A fresh loan to Sheffield United would reunite him with Patrick Bamford, who signed an 18-month deal in January 2026 after joining as a free agent. Both players could feature in the Blades’ Championship campaign, with Wilder banking on their experience to bolster the squad.
