Blades’ skipper maps out his mission

Sheffield United’s new captain Matt Doherty has vowed to guide his teammates as the Blades chase promotion back to the Premier League. The 35-year-old Republic of Ireland international arrived at Bramall Lane on a free transfer in June and has already started shaping the squad’s mentality ahead of the Championship opener on 2 August.

What did the Irishman say?

Speaking to the club’s official website on 22 July, Doherty stressed his focus on lifting the group rather than personal glory. “I want to help every lad here become the best version of themselves,” he told reporters. “That’s how we’ll push for promotion.” The former Tottenham defender arrives with two Premier League titles and a Europa League crown from his eight years in north London.

Why his presence matters now

Doherty’s arrival gives Sheffield United an instant voice in the dressing room and on the pitch. His leadership could steady a side that finished sixth last season, just five points shy of the playoffs. The club’s hierarchy has made clear they view him as a key bridge between the dugout and the first XI. “He brings experience and a winning habit,” said Paul Heckingbottom, the manager, who took charge in December 2023. “That’s exactly what we need.”

Next stop: Bramall Lane

Sheffield United open their league campaign at home to Middlesbrough on 2 August. Doherty will wear the armband for the first time in the Championship when he leads the side out at Bramall Lane. The Blades’ pre-season tour includes friendlies against Burton Albion on 20 July and Derby County on 27 July, giving Heckingbottom a final chance to bed in his new captain before the league kicks off.
