Sheffield United pull off Doherty coup after Wolves release
Sheffield United have completed the signing of Matt Doherty on a free transfer. The 35-year-old defender arrives at Bramall Lane after his release from Wolves, adding Championship-winning experience to Paul Heckingbottom’s squad.
What the Doherty deal means for the Blades
Doherty’s arrival gives Sheffield United a proven Premier League right-back with 200 top-flight appearances. His Championship-winning pedigree with Wolves in 2023-24 adds steel to a defence that conceded just 40 goals last season. The Irish international also brings Champions League experience, having featured for Tottenham in their 2018-19 run to the final.
How the Blades pulled it off
United moved fast after Wolves’ release confirmed on 1 July 2026. Doherty, out of contract since June, had been linked with MLS moves but opted for a return to England. Paul Heckingbottom’s need for defensive cover-especially on the right-sealed the deal before pre-season training resumed on 15 July.
What comes next for Doherty at Bramall Lane
The defender will link up with his new teammates for pre-season training this week. His first competitive outing could come in the Championship opener on 9 August 2026 against Middlesbrough. With 150+ senior caps across England’s top flight, Doherty will compete for the starting berth with youngster Harry Boyes, who impressed in pre-season friendlies.
