Sheffield United are on the verge of another transfer exit, with midfielder Alex Matos closing in on a loan move to Turkish side Göztepe. The move will free up space in the Blades' budget and give Matos a fresh chance to revive his career.
What happened?
Matos, a £1m signing from Chelsea last summer, has fallen out of Chris Wilder's first-team plans and is set to leave Bramall Lane.
The Star first revealed in January that Matos was free to seek a move away from Sheffield United, and he is now closing in on a loan deal to Göztepe, with an option to make it permanent.
Why it matters for Sheffield United
The move will give Sheffield United more wriggle room in their budget and allow them to bring in new signings. With Matos understood to be amongst the top earners at Bramall Lane, his departure will be a significant boost to the club's finances.
What comes next?
Sheffield United are still looking to trim down their squad further, with boss Chris Wilder keen to improve on last season's 13th-placed finish. The Blades have already seen winger Andre Brooks leave for Norwich City, and Matos's departure will be the latest in a series of exits.
| Player | Destination | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Andre Brooks | Norwich City | Undisclosed |
| Alex Matos | Göztepe | Loan with option to buy |
Sheffield United are understood to be progressing in their bid to bring Kalvin Phillips back to South Yorkshire, with Joe Rothwell, Sydie Peck, and Oliver Arblaster also ahead of Matos in the midfield pecking order. Boss Chris Wilder said of Matos in January: 'There's been interest in Alex. I think he realises as well that he needs to go out and play.'
