Sheffield United's former midfielder John Fleck has spoken about his decision to join the club in July 2016. Fleck, who was 34, had rejected a new contract offer from Coventry City and was looking for a new challenge. He said that a walk inside Bramall Lane instantly convinced him to make the move. Fleck had starred for the Sky Blues in 2015/16, winning the club’s Player of the Year award. He was one of a handful of players signed by Chris Wilder that summer, which went on to play key roles in the club’s sharp progress under Wilder. Fleck established himself as a modern-day legend at Bramall Lane, making 278 appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals. He was a two-time promotion winner with the Blades and scored the opening goal in their famous 4-2 win over arch rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in September 2017. Fleck told BBC Radio Sheffield that he was thankful that a previous move to the club had fallen through, as it allowed him to join the Blades later on. He said that he had to drive back down from Glasgow to get the deal sorted, but it was the best decision he had made. Fleck reflected on his time at Bramall Lane, saying it was the best time in his career. He praised the group of players he was with, saying that they were friends for life. Fleck also spoke about the changing room at the club, saying that it was a unique and special place. He still gets along well with Chris Wilder, the manager who brought him to the club. Fleck's departure from the club in February 2024 was met with sadness from the fans, but he will always be remembered as a legend at Bramall Lane.
