Sheffield United legend Billy Sharp has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40. The striker, a boyhood Blade who captained the club, confirmed his decision live on Sky Sports ahead of the Southampton-Portsmouth derby on Sunday morning, also sharing the news in an Instagram post.
Sharp bows out after a 22-year career that yielded 299 goals in 814 senior appearances for nine clubs, including more than 300 games and over a century of goals for United. His final act was a memorable hat-trick for Doncaster Rovers in a 3-1 win over Peterborough United on the last day of the 2025/26 season, a game in which he also had a fourth goal disallowed for offside.
"I'm going to hang my boots up," Sharp said. "I've given it a good ride. I've got a long way, got to 40." He added that he was determined to leave on his own terms, stating, "I wanted to go out on my own terms. I've seen many friends get taken away by injury and things like that."
A Blade through and through
Sharp's connection with Sheffield United defined his career. He made his first-team debut for the club in 2004, returning for a second spell in 2007 before his most celebrated period began with a third arrival in 2015. That eight-year stay cemented his legendary status. He was instrumental in the club's rise, scoring 30 goals as United won the League One title with 100 points in the 2016/17 season. The following campaign, his 23 goals helped secure automatic promotion to the Premier League, where he famously scored in the club's first top-flight game back at Bournemouth. He netted key goals against the Cherries at Bramall Lane and Norwich City during a season that saw United finish an impressive ninth.
His final goal for the Blades came in an FA Cup fourth-round replay against Wrexham at Bramall Lane in February 2023. After leaving United that summer, he spent a final season with Doncaster, adding 71 goals to his tally across four separate spells with Rovers, including 15 in the 2009/10 campaign. In total, he made 397 appearances in the Championship, scoring 130 goals in the second-tier era.
The legacy and what's next
Sharp has been a free agent since the end of last season, and his retirement brings the curtain down on one of the most prolific careers in recent English football history. His departure leaves a lasting legacy at Bramall Lane, where his passion and goal-scoring prowess made him a fan favourite for nearly two decades.
The current Blades side, who recently ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Lincoln City, will now look to their new generation of forwards. Patrick Bamford, the club's current top scorer with four goals this season, netted twice in that victory. The team's form has been mixed, with two wins and three losses in their last five outings. They face a tough test next, travelling to face Portsmouth in their upcoming fixtures. Fans can review the contributions of the full squad, and remember those of legends past, on the club's squad page. Sharp's retirement marks the end of an era, but the club's focus is firmly on the future, with their next Championship match set for this week.
