Chris Wilder says all options are being considered as he searches for the best way to set up his Sheffield United squad. The manager's comments come with the Blades sitting just two points off the Championship's automatic promotion places after six games.
Sheffield United's position is built on a recent run of three wins from their last five matches, including a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers on 8 September. Tom Cannon and Sam Peck scored the goals that day, turning the game around after Kieffer Montgomery had put the hosts ahead.
Gritty form and a changed squad
That win at Ewood Park was characteristic of their current form, where results have not always mirrored performance. The team was second best on key statistics like possession and shots but found a way to win, a trait reminiscent of the side that reached the 2025 play-off final.
This season's squad, however, is markedly different. Key sales like Gustavo Hamer, Andre Brooks and Callum O'Hare have not been matched by major incoming transfers, with the club limited to free agents and loans. The ongoing threat of a points deduction also looms, with the EFL and Independent Football Regulator looking into the club's ownership transfer and a £35m debt to former owners.
Cannon's contribution and staff changes
One bright spot has been the form of striker Tom Cannon. He has three goals already this season, halfway to his total of six from the entirety of the last campaign. His goal at Blackburn was assisted by Sam Peck, who then scored himself from a James Rothwell pass.
Off the pitch, Wilder's backroom team has seen significant change. Long-time assistant Alan Knill departed in the summer, with Mickey Collins promoted to the number two role. Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has also been brought in as an aspiring coach.

Wilder, now in his third spell at the club having returned just under a year ago, is focused on maximising the group he has. "All options are being considered as he searches for a system, style and formation to get the best out of his squad," the manager said.
Despite the summer's challenges, the Blades possess good players in all areas and have shown the resilience needed for a promotion push. With several players currently sidelined, including Femi Seriki and Harrison Burrows, squad management will be key.
