Oliver Arblaster’s fifth-minute strike gave Sheffield United a vital 1-0 victory away to Bristol City on Saturday. The three points ended a run of four consecutive league defeats for Chris Wilder’s side, with their last result being the 1-0 win at Bristol City on 17 October. This victory was a welcome change from a recent form of one win and four defeats in their last five matches.
Arblaster, starting in central midfield, finished a move to give the Blades an early lead they would protect for the rest of the match. The win lifts them in the Championship standings ahead of next weekend’s home game against Derby on Saturday 24 October.
How the match unfolded
Sheffield United started brightly and were rewarded almost immediately. The decisive moment came when Arblaster found space inside the box and fired home past goalkeeper Tickle. The visitors then managed the game effectively, limiting Bristol City to few clear chances despite the hosts having 53% possession.
Bristol City manager Skubala made a double change at half-time, introducing Elijah Adebayo and Jed Wallace, but his team struggled to break down a resolute United defence. The best chance for an equaliser fell to Tommy Conway, but his effort was comfortably saved by Cooper.
Chris Wilder made a series of substitutions in the second half to see out the game, bringing on Patrick Bamford and Sam McCallum. Bamford, the club’s top scorer this season with four goals in ten appearances, received a late yellow card for dissent. Bristol City’s Brian de Keersmaecker was also booked in stoppage time.
Wilder's reaction
The 3-2 defeat at Portsmouth on 14 October, where goals from Japhet Tanganga and Thomas Cannon were not enough, was a particularly narrow setback.
The result halts a worrying sequence for United, whose recent form read WLLLL with just one win in their last five matches. They now turn their attention to a Yorkshire derby at Bramall Lane next Saturday.
Sheffield United’s next match is against Derby County on 24 October, with kick-off at 12:30 local time. The team will hope to build on the clean sheet secured at Bristol City, where the only goal was scored by Oliver Arblaster in the fifth minute.
