Tom Cannon’s Transfer Status

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder confirmed that a loose approach was made for striker Tom Cannon, but he insists the forward remains with the club. The approach, reportedly from a Championship side, was turned down straight away and Wilder said he has not heard anything over the weekend.

Wilder added that the dialogue between him and club secretary Steve Bettis is open and frequent. "I’m absolutely 100% certain that if there’s anything that’s happened, he would have let me know and he’s not. So, Tom’s with us," he said.

Interest from Former Clubs

Weekend reports suggested that there had been interest in Cannon from the Championship, with his former clubs Preston North End and Stoke City among those keeping a watchful eye on the forward’s situation. One club in particular had made a loose approach last week, which was rejected by the club.

Cannon did not start Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Swansea City, where Patrick Bamford led the line and Tyrese Campbell came on as a substitute for Bamford in the final stages.

Wilder’s Transfer Window Stance

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup tie with Blackburn Rovers, Wilder revealed one club had been in touch regarding Cannon’s availability. He stressed that while the club is looking to strengthen its squad, he cannot make any cast-iron promises that there won’t be further outgoings.

"I want to build a good team here," Wilder said. "I think we’re on the way to that. We’re not there yet. I don’t want to lose any players. I can’t sit here and tell you that none of the players will go. There’s no fire sale, so everyone needs to calm down about that."

He added that he cannot guarantee that nobody will leave, especially if a player is offered a fee of 15, 20, or 25 million and wants to go. "The closer it gets to Tuesday, the transfer deadline day, the more we realise that we don’t have a lot of time to replace if somebody does go out of the building," he warned.

Building the Squad

Wilder said the club has not been told to move any players on. He is working with the group to bring better players into the club, noting that the new signings are in good spirits and the mentality of the group is good, connected and together. "We’re pointing in the right direction, so I don’t want us to lose that. It will only weaken us if we do lose anybody," he concluded.
