Sheffield United forward Ryan One is facing another extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a recurrence of a hamstring injury. Manager Chris Wilder confirmed the fresh setback on Thursday, dealing a blow to the club's attacking options ahead of a busy period.
"We've had some disappointing news regarding Ryan," Wilder told reporters. "It was the same spot that he got the initial injury, so a recurrence of that." The 24-year-old had only recently returned to action after his previous issue.
There was more positive news on striker Patrick Bamford, who is expected to be available for selection this Friday. Bamford was forced off with a shoulder problem during the recent 2-1 victory over Derby County. "He took a big bang," Wilder said. "We've assessed him this week and we're hopeful that he'll be available." Defender Mark McGuinness is also set to return after missing the Derby match with a head injury.
Squad depth tested
The loss of One tests United's squad depth as they prepare for a key run of Championship fixtures. The Blades currently sit 12th in the standings, eight points adrift of the playoff places with a game in hand on several teams above them. One's absence removes a direct attacking option, placing greater responsibility on the fit-again Bamford and other forwards in the squad.
Sheffield United's next challenge is a home match against Bristol City on Friday evening. Following that, they face a trip to league leaders Leeds United the following Tuesday, a sequence that will demand a full complement of players. Wilder will be relieved to have Bamford and McGuinness back in contention for these tests.
United's injury list has been a persistent theme this season, impacting their ability to build consistent momentum. The return of key personnel for the upcoming fixtures provides a timely boost as the club looks to close the gap to the top six. The full squad list shows the areas where cover will now be required in One's absence.
