Sheffield United's summer sale of Gustavo Hamer to Coventry City for £6m is being scrutinised as the midfielder's early season form at his new club has been labelled sluggish. The 29-year-old's departure has left a creative void in Chris Wilder's squad, a loss felt as United handle a challenging Championship campaign with two consecutive defeats.
Coventry Live, the club's local media outlet, gave Hamer an early season grade of just 4/10, saying he had started his second stint with City "a little bit sluggishly". Hamer has made five appearances in all competitions, but only three brief Premier League outings totalling 34 minutes, and was an unused substitute for the last two league matches under manager Frank Lampard.
His performance in a Carabao Cup defeat to Aston Villa did draw praise, with Lampard highlighting the player's finishing ability from outside the box. Yet the overall assessment shows a slow start for a player who managed 22 goals and 29 assists in 123 games for Sheffield United.
Hamer's Sheffield United legacy
Hamer's technical talent and ability to create moments of magic were central to United's play during his three-year spell. His contract at Bramall Lane was due to run until 2027, making his £6m summer sale a significant piece of business. While Wilder's current side includes gifted players, none have yet matched the consistent spark provided by their former number eight.
That creative shortfall has coincided with a dip in results. Sheffield United's recent form shows three wins and two losses from their last five, but they head into the international break on the back of successive defeats. They fell 2-1 at Stoke City last time out, with Kalvin Phillips scoring their consolation, before a 1-0 loss at Fleetwood Town. You can review the full sequence of results on our fixtures page.
The team now prepares for a return to home action against Lincoln City on 10 October, looking to rediscover a winning formula. The search for a consistent creative force in midfield remains a key task, a role once filled so effectively by Gustavo Hamer. His next opportunity to impress for Coventry comes after the international break.
