Sheffield United's fan advisory board has called for concrete information from the club's owners after a meeting this week yielded only general assurances. The demand comes amid deepening supporter frustration following the team's League Cup elimination by fourth-tier Fleetwood Town and a concerning run of form that has seen them lose their last two matches.

Co-chairman Steven Rosen, chief executive Stephen Bettis and manager Chris Wilder met with the fan advisory board (FAB) this week. The FAB said in posts on social media platform X that it had "received assurances that the club is being run in a responsible manner, yet no details were revealed." Supporters have requested actual information to back up those assurances, with the board stating it will consult the Football Supporters' Association and local MPs before releasing more details.

Cup exit fuels discontent

The meeting followed a dismal 1-0 defeat at home to Fleetwood Town in the League Cup on September 16, sealed by an own goal from Rhys Norrington-Davies. The loss to a side from League Two angered fans, who questioned the team's performance and the decision to use a 4-4-2 formation. That result was followed by a 2-1 league defeat at Stoke City last Thursday, where Kalvin Phillips's 51st-minute opener was overturned by late goals from Jack McGlynn and Sam Gallagher. The back-to-back losses have halted momentum from a three-game winning streak, leaving the Blades' recent form reading LLWWW. The team's underlying stats are also worrying, with the side in the bottom five of the Championship for expected goals per game (1.04) and facing the fourth-highest average for expected goals against (1.67).

Chris Wilder had complained about the schedule before the Fleetwood match, despite a three-week international break looming. The manager will now need to rally his squad for the next challenge: a Championship fixture against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, where the team will be aiming to stop a run of two consecutive defeats.

Ownership questions persist

Off the pitch, significant questions remain about the club's direction and financial health. It is alleged the current owners owe former owners £35 million, a matter understood to be under scrutiny by the EFL and the new Independent Football Regulator. In a separate online appearance, co-chairman Steven Rosen participated in a YouTube chat dressed as a new podcast, where he was not challenged on club matters. Reflecting on the fan board meeting, Rosen said, "He seemed to think simply not being in the same mess Sheffield Wednesday found themselves in a year ago was a positive."

The broader context is one of missed opportunity. It was only 481 days ago that Sheffield United led Sunderland 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, only to fall short of promotion. That contrast with the current predicament, which sees the team in the lower half of the standings, has sharpened calls for clear leadership. The focus will be on whether the hierarchy can provide the transparency and direction demanded by a concerned fanbase.
